Consultation with a Psychiatrist

Seeing a psychiatrist or psychologist can be helpful if you suspect you may be experiencing mental health conditions such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, trauma, eating disorders, ADHD, or OCD. You may also benefit from professional support during periods of extraordinary stress—for example, relationship challenges, workplace difficulties, or academic pressure. Our FAQ below will help you understand what to expect and how we can support you.

Questions? We have answers.

A psychiatrist is a medical doctor and specialist trained in diagnosing and treating mental health conditions. They hold a medical degree and postgraduate qualifications in psychiatry, and are accredited by the Ministry of Health to provide psychiatric care, including prescribing medication. A clinical psychologist is trained in psychological assessment and therapy. They typically hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and are skilled in evidence-based therapies such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and others. Both psychiatrists and psychologists at Private Space work holistically—understanding your concerns in the context of your life story, personality, and strengths.
At Private Space, you are welcome to choose whom to see first. If you are open to exploring the use of medication alongside therapy, starting with a psychiatrist may be ideal. If you prefer to avoid medication and want to focus on talk therapy or behavioural strategies, seeing a therapist is a good first step.
Upon arrival at our clinic, our friendly counter staff will guide you through the registration process. You’ll be asked to complete a form that includes background details and some short questionnaires—this helps us understand your current situation. Your psychiatrist or psychologist will meet with you for approximately 60 minutes. During this time, you’ll have the space to speak openly in a confidential setting. Together, you’ll explore what’s going on, and your clinician will propose a provisional diagnosis and a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This may involve medication, lifestyle strategies, or a recommended type of psychological therapy. Your preferences will always be respected. If medication is prescribed, you may collect it from our counter and arrange a follow-up appointment. The number and frequency of follow-ups will depend on your condition and your treatment goals.
We may ask about your early life experiences, education, work background, relationships, and current living arrangements. We also take an interest in your lifestyle and hobbies, as these contribute to your emotional well-being. Medical history, current medications, and any known drug allergies will also be discussed. If you’ve seen a psychiatrist or therapist in the past, we’ll want to understand what helped—or didn’t—so we can develop the most effective and personalised treatment plan for you.
Medication may or may not be part of your treatment—this depends on whether a psychiatric diagnosis is made, and on the nature and severity of your condition. In many cases of mild to moderate mental health concerns, recovery is possible without medication. Many psychological conditions respond well to therapy, or to a combination of medication and therapy. If medication is recommended, your doctor will walk you through your options, including potential benefits and side effects. Our goal is to empower you to make informed decisions and take charge of your own recovery. We are here as your trusted partners on this journey.
Most psychological conditions are highly treatable. While some may be chronic or long-term, early intervention significantly increases the likelihood of recovery. Our focus is always on helping you regain function, confidence, and a sense of purpose in life. At Private Space, we take pride in helping individuals move from survival to thriving. Seeking help is a courageous and empowered choice.
The frequency of your appointments depends on your individual condition and treatment plan. Some clients may attend sessions weekly, while others come fortnightly, monthly, or even every few months. We’ll work with you to find a rhythm that best supports your progress.
Counselling provides emotional support through empathic listening and helping clients express their current thoughts and emotions. Psychological therapy goes deeper. It explores the roots of your concerns and equips you with tools for long-term change—whether by shifting perspectives, reframing thoughts, or implementing behavioural strategies. Therapy has been shown to bring lasting positive changes, even at the level of brain circuitry.
The timeline for improvement varies depending on your condition and the treatment approach. Many clients begin to feel better within 1 to 2 weeks, with more significant improvements emerging over 4 to 6 weeks. Every individual is different, and your progress will be supported and monitored closely.
