Art Therapy

Art therapy uses art-making as a way to express and explore thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It’s not about creating “good” art — it’s about using creativity as a tool for self-understanding and healing. Facilitated by a trained art therapist (with a Master’s degree in art therapy), this approach is suitable for anyone, regardless of artistic skill.
In art therapy, the relationship between you, your art, and the therapist forms the foundation of the therapeutic process. Through painting, drawing, clay work, or mixed media, clients access emotions that are often hard to express in words. Art becomes the bridge between the inner world and healing.

Who Is It For?

Art therapy is suitable for individuals, couples, and groups across all age groups. It can help with:

Art Therapy vs Counselling

Both art therapy and counselling involve working with trained mental health professionals, but they differ in approach. Art therapy leverages the creative process to facilitate self-discovery and healing. While art-making is central, elements of talk therapy are incorporated to teach valuable psychological skills and techniques. This approach is particularly beneficial for individuals new to therapy, those who’ve experienced trauma or intense emotions, or those who find prolonged conversations challenging. Suitable for both adults and children, art therapy can also strengthen parent-child relationships and improve family dynamics. Art therapy can be especially valuable for those new to therapy, or for those who’ve experienced trauma, grief, or overwhelming emotions.

An interview with Ms Siti Mariam, Principal & Art Therapist

Siti Mariam: This artwork is part of a series I created in response to my experiences providing psycho-emotional support in the hospital ICU. It’s titled Overwhelmed, reflecting the common emotion experienced by the loved ones of critically ill patients.

Siti Mariam: Yes, there is. During my time supporting patients and their loved ones, I would often take psychological breaks by looking out through the large glass windows in some of the ICU rooms. The sky — with its blue and white tones — always caught my attention. I chose these colours to capture and convey those moments of respite amidst overwhelming circumstances.
Siti Mariam: I chose to use the acrylic pour art technique, where multiple colours of acrylic paint are poured onto the canvas and allowed to spread naturally. This method reminded me of how we have limited control over our lives. While I can choose the colours and the order in which they’re poured, I cannot fully control how they interact and spread. This represents the lack of control we often experience in life. The technique allowed me to portray the mix of emotions present in the ICU — a space where the calmness of the outside world contrasts with the intense feelings blending together within.
